Area Parks:
The Park District owns thirty-one properties and controls over 600 acres
of land. Park resources include neighborhood and community parks, of which
twelve parks are located along the Kankakee River. Seven miles of walking
trails, fourteen picnic pavilions, five boat landings, a marina with 96
rental slips, a radio control airplane field, a six field softball
complex, two football fields, five rental buildings, and a small
campground.
Alpiner—Located
just west of Provena St. Mary’s Hospital. Its ball field is home to the
Elks Pony League. It has a view of the river, a nice sized playground, and
a walking trail.
Beckman—
This park is a hub of
activity for locals and visitors alike. Its features; a brand new
playground, a boat launch and harbor, a mini roller hockey rink,
ballfields, picnic pavilion and a fieldhouse. The ballfields are home to
the Jaycees Little League.
Bird—A
pleasant community park! There are many historical features within the
park. For the fisherman, there is a boat launch, river bank fishing and
quarry fishing. The park also has a brand new large playground,
walking trails, horseshoe pits, and a sledding hill. There is a picnic
pavilion and a fieldhouse that can be rented for family gatherings. Many
new features are soon to come—we’re in the process of upgrading the park!!
Cobb—A
beautiful community park with a spectacular view of the Kankakee River!
The park also has a playground, a picnic pavilion, a walking trail, tennis
courts, and a large open area that’s perfect for the family pet. Fishermen
are welcome, too.
Washington –
A great park to
play a game of basketball. Many community groups utilize this park for
local gatherings. Besides a large basketball court the park has a
playground and tennis courts, which in the winter serve as an ice rink.
River Road –
This park has a
large
softball
complex with 6 fields and a pavilion, perfect for a company picnic. The
park also has a football field, a model airplane field, river access and walking trails. Each year the Kankakee River Regatta
is held on park grounds.
Splash Valley
Aquatic Park
is now open. Stop by to enjoy the slides, lazy river and zero depth pool.
Jeffers –
A fun neighborhood
park, with a newly built handicap-accessible playground. The playgrounds
castle adventure theme has drawn the attention of many families. The park
also has a walking trail, river access and ½ court basketball. A pavilion
is available for family gatherings.
McBroom –
A popular
neighborhood park. Equipped with a small playground, a basketball court,
tennis courts, and a grassy softball field.
Marycrest –
This park too,
has a new playground! The nearby pavilion makes a perfect location for a
child’s birthday party or a family gathering.
Pioneer –
A large community
park with many recreational activities available, like basketball,
softball and tennis. A building and pavilion are available for community
use. |
